Hello, from Austria (en ruote to Israel)

January 7, 2013

Currently, I am on the second leg of my journey to Israel – the flight to Vienna, Austria. In fact, I’m typing this from the plane at midnight Central Time, which is 6 a.m. Austria time. (Posting it from the Vienna airport). The last flight will get us to Tel Aviv at 3 p.m. Israel time (there is an eight-hour time difference between Kansas and Israel).

I am quite exhausted already, and all I’ve done is fly. It’s not easy to sleep on a plane, especially in the middle seat, especially when the plane is full of adrenaline-filled young adults on an Austrian Airlines flight (read between the lines), but I think I got about an hour. That’s good at least. Also, there was a dog – an actual dog – in the seat next to me on the flight to JFK. Cannot make this stuff up. Oh well, I still enjoy flying and airports.

Anyway, these next ten days are packed, so I want to soak up every detail. Hopefully the flight to Tel Aviv (in only a couple hours!) will give me some much-needed adrenaline. I’m sure once I’m actually in Israel, I’ll be ready for action.

Also, I’ll have WiFi access on the buses every day, so I may post short blogs once in a while during the trip and can keep up with the homefront (specifically, some Jayhawk basketball scores). Expect a full report when I get back and am rested from the jet lag.

Finally, I just want to thank everyone who supported me and encouraged me to do this. I am very lucky to have people who care about me and are there for me every day.

P.S. There was a nifty setting on the personal video sets on this flight that allowed me to see the view ahead of the plane. I watched the stars as I ate my Kosher breakfast this morning (yep, they had special meals for us on this flight).
