What if… (inspired by “Grey’s Anatomy”)

February 5, 2012

“What if one little thing I said or did could have made it all fall apart. What if I’d chosen another life for myself, or another person. We might not have found each other. What if I’d been raised differently. What if, what if, what if…”

That is the question that haunted Thursday’s alternate reality episode of “Grey’s Anatomy,” one that put each character in a different life with different personalities and even different mates. Watching my favorite characters resemble people completely contradictory to themselves made me think: what if I had made one decision or done one thing that had made the course of my life take an entirely different direction?

I know I am myself for a reason. In my 19 years on this planet, I’ve made decisions that have defined me. The people I surround myself with and reputation I have made for myself all contribute to my personality. Somehow, through the course of my actions and words from my mouth, I have ended up in the place and as the person I am today.

Sure, things could have turned out differently. I could have said something differently. I could have done something else with my time. I could have presented myself differently. I could have acted differently. I could have gone somewhere else. I could have been different. What if, what if, what if…

However, if one lives every day thinking about the what ifs, one will be miserable. We cannot change our past; we can only appreciate the present and look forward to everything else to come. There is a reason everything turned out the way it did. As Meredith Grey on “Grey’s Anatomy” said, “Your life is a gift; accept it, no matter how screwed up or painful it seems to be. Some things are going to work out as if they were destined to happen. As if they were just meant to be.”
